De Rose’s Math Problem of the Week
Mr. De Rose is having a huge birthday party. He is having it at a restaurant. People have a choice of sitting at a table that seats 10 people or a table that seats 8. Two hundred and fourteen guests are planning to attend.
Please show all your math work and write the answer in a neat, organized sentence!

  1. Including Mr. De Rose and his wife, how many people will be attending?
  2. Draw a floor plan that displays a large rectangular dinning room with the correct amount of tables needed to seat all the people.
  3. Create another plan that includes a least 4 eight person tables.
  4. It’s 7pm and the chef wants to know if everyone has arrived. How could Mr. De Rose estimate if almost everyone has arrived? He doesn’t want to count everyone or ask everyone to sit down.
