Weather Grade 5 Home project

Rain Gauge Monitoring

Home Project

For the next 5 days, starting on November 2nd, you are asked to use your rain gauge to record the amount of moisture in your area. Rain, dew, even fog can be measured with a rain gauge. We will be integrating science, math and writing into this project. This project is intended to help strengthen your understanding of weather and how hands-on measuring is vital to accurate science.
You will be responsible for the following:

  1. Making a rain gauge
  2. Recording the moisture level everyday at the same time. Before heading off to school or right after school is usually the best. (after recording the data, empty the cup)
  3. Create a T-table of the data
  4. Create a bar graph and explaining three important things you discovered
  5. Create a line graph and explaining two trends that you discovered
  6. Create a one page report on your project using the "Report Style of Writing found in First Steps Writing

All graphs and tables need to be: accurate, organized, colourful, neat, and have all the necessary titles. Please use a ruler and colouring pencils or markers for the graphs. The report writing needs to be organized, neatly written, logical and use proper paragraphs. Ensure all spelling and grammar is correct. Let a member of the family proof read the draft work and finished copy. Feel free to do the write up on the computer, but its not necessary. All graphs need to be done by hand, not on the computer.

Remember to have fun, you’re all meteorologist!
